Sing along with your phone

One phone, one song, one take. This is the easiest way to get a video on the wall.

  1. 01

Find the song without the singer

Search YouTube or your music app for your song plus the word 'karaoke' or 'instrumental'. Karaoke versions show the words on screen, which helps if you forget a line. If you'd rather sing over the original, that's fine too — it just means the real singer is in there with you.

  2. 02

Play it out loud, not in headphones

If you only need one phone: play the song on a speaker in the room and record with the phone. You'll hear the music on the video along with your voice. If you have a second device (a laptop, tablet, or a friend's phone), play the song on that and keep your phone free for filming.

  3. 03

Prop the phone up and turn it sideways

Lean the phone against a mug, a book stack, or use a cheap tripod. Turn it sideways (landscape) so the video fills the screen for everyone watching. Stand about an arm and a half away, with your head and shoulders in frame.

  4. 04

Light your face, not your back

Face a window or a lamp. If the bright light is behind you, you'll come out as a shadow. Daytime near a window looks best and costs nothing.

  5. 05

    Get the sound right

Turn the music down a little lower than feels natural — phones record your voice loudly and the music can swamp it. Close a door, turn off a fan or the TV, and do a ten-second test recording first. Play it back: if you can hear your words clearly, you're set.

  6. 06

    Hit record and commit

Open the camera, switch to Video, tap record, count 'one, two, three' in your head and go. Don't stop for mistakes — cracked notes and giggles are the best part. If you want a second try, take it, but the first one is usually the funniest.

  7. 07

    Keep it short and upload

Thirty seconds to two minutes is the sweet spot — a verse and a chorus is plenty. Then head back to the home page, sign in, give it a silly name, pick Car, Shower, Cooking or Working, and send it in. We'll have a look and pop it on the wall.

Little extras, if you want them

  • Wired earbuds with a mic clipped near your collar make your voice noticeably clearer.
  • Wipe the camera lens — a smudgy lens looks like fog.
  • Put the phone in Do Not Disturb so a call doesn't end your big finish.
  • Only post music you're allowed to share, and keep other people out of frame unless they said yes.

Ready? The wall is waiting.

Off-key is encouraged. Laughing at yourself is the whole sport.
