Car singing is the purest form of the art. Here's how to catch it on camera without fiddling while you drive.
Set everything up while parked. Never touch the camera, your phone or the music while the car is moving, and never mount anything where it blocks your view or an airbag. If you're at all unsure, film in the driveway with the engine off — nobody watching can tell the difference, and it's the safest option by far.
A GoPro or similar action camera is ideal: wide lens, tiny body, happy to be stuck to a window. A phone works just as well — the guide is the same, you just need a phone mount instead of a GoPro mount.
A suction-cup mount on the windshield or side window is the most flexible. A vent clip or cup-holder gooseneck also works nicely for a phone. Clean the glass first with a dry cloth — dust is the number one reason suction cups let go. Give it a gentle tug before you trust it.
Two favourites: low on the windshield to the passenger side, aimed back at you, which catches your face plus a bit of the road going by; or on the passenger window pointed across at you for a side-on shot with scenery behind. Frame from your chest to just above your head and leave a little space above.
The sun behind you turns you into a silhouette. Drive with the sun in front of or beside you, or park facing the light. Overcast days are flattering. Late afternoon looks lovely and hides nothing.
Cars are loud — road noise, wind and the stereo all fight your voice. Close the windows, turn the air conditioning down a notch, and keep the stereo a bit quieter than you'd normally enjoy. If your camera takes an external mic or you have earbuds with a mic, use them and you'll sound twice as good.
1080p at 30 frames per second is plenty, and the files stay small enough to upload easily. On a GoPro, choose the Linear or Wide lens (SuperView bends faces oddly up close) and turn stabilisation on. Switch off any voice-control beeps so they don't land in your chorus.
Start recording before you pull away and just let it run for a song or two. Afterwards, park, watch it back, and trim it to the best thirty seconds to two minutes using your phone's built-in editor. Then sign in on the home page, name it something ridiculous, choose the Car category, and send it in.
